Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is just
ten minutes drive from Santa Pon¨a. Fortunately it is shielded from
the concrete towers of nearby Magaluf by the naturally occurring valleys
through which many of the holes run. Poniente is many people's favourite
course on Mallorca, combining as it does superb golf holes and outstanding
views, especially from the high tees at the 8th, oth and I8th. The
course comes in two very distinct parts. On the northern side of the
road that cuts through the layout there are seven flattish holes.
These are perfectly good but they pale alongside the n fabulous holes
on the other side, many of which are characterised by avenues of tall
pine trees. These holes call for one arrow-straight tee shot after
another, and you won't find a tighter approach anywhere on the island
than the 16th.
If it is not to fall down the precipice into the pit on the rightt
your drive has to pass within a whisker of the trees on the left.
If you do lose it right you will give yourself as good a view of the
flag as Ronnie Corbett gets when he falls into a divot. The clubhouse
at Golf Poniente resembles an authentic Mallorquin manor house and
like most clubhouses on the island, it is an absolute beauty. Its
stone floors and walls keep the place cool and make it the perfect
spot for a post-round San Miguel, or Estrella if you prefer your beer
with some flavour.
